KOREAN WAR

Russo-Japanese War, the Japanese invaded and occupied Korea in 1910 During the course of World War II, leaders of Great Britain, China, United States and Soviet Union met to decide the fate of Japan and her territories when hostilities ended.

In their Cairo Declaration of November 1943, a promise was made that in due course Korea shall become free and independent. When the Japanese surrendered in 1945, the Soviet Union occupied North Korea, and the United States took control in South Korea.

The 38th Parallel was chosen as the dividing line. It was assumed that the occupation would be temporary and that a unified, independent country would eventually be formed.

Unfortunately, as the Cold War developed between the west and the Soviet Union, the 38th Parallel became a more permanent boundary.

In 1946, the Soviet Union established a communist regime in the North,    which they proceeded to arm and train under the leadership of Kim IL Sung.

The south was established democracy under the leadership of Syngman Rhee and complicated by the artificial boundary the economic and political situation grew desperate, and by 1946, he was appealing for an end to the division of his country.
